In a fast-changing and constantly evolving society, the IRSS positions itself as a place for reflection, sharing and intellectual innovation. Its members master the theoretical and empirical dimensions of their specialist disciplines: sociology, anthropology, criminology, political science and economics.
W
ithin the IRSS, the emphasis is on constantly improving the interdisciplinary nature of researchh, both within the framework of collaborations between researchers at the Faculté des Sciences Sociales (FaSS) and with researchers in other fields, in a trans-disciplinary spirit.
The research carried out at the IRSS is in direct contact with the facts and events that shape the social, cultural and political reality of contemporary societies.
These facts and events are always contextualized and understood in their historical context. Realities as varied as globalization, migration, inter-ethnic relations, gender relations, the nature of social ties, political and economic norms, the general interest, changes in the state, citizenship, solidarity and the public good are analyzed in depth over the long term, a prerequisite if they are to be understood in the present in all their complexity. This attention to the multi-dimensional nature of social and human issues is also reflected in approaches based on the displacement and multiplication of points of view, whether in theoretical work, evaluation (of public services, NGOs or associations, for example), diagnosis or advice that transcends the limits of simple consultancy.
The empirical dimension is another of the main features of IRSS's work. It is expressed in the particular practice of participant observation and quantitative surveys, as well as in our involvement in numerous partnerships, both in the North and South, with academic and non-academic institutions, within the framework of commissioned and non-commissioned research. These field experiences and partnerships are crucibles for ideas that will give rise to new initiatives. They also enable researchers to develop expertise and skills that can be put to good use in their respective social commitments to a wide range of political and socio-cultural players.
Past annual seminars
